Augusta, Maine — Americans for Prosperity (AFP) released the following statement after Maine’s $500 million supplemental budget officially took effect. The fine print includes a new tax on top of last year’s tax hikes, with $292 million pulled from the state’s emergency reserve fund and $300 “relief checks” perfectly timed before November’s election.
AFP Northeast Region Director Ross Connolly said:
“Maine has one of the highest costs of living, a direct result of Augusta Democrats’ policies that have increased taxes and energy prices. Mainers should be asking a simple question after almost two decades of this leadership: how did my life get better? By almost every measure, it hasn’t.
“This exorbitant budget goes against Governor Mills’ promise not to raise taxes and will negatively affect the state’s economic future. AFP will continue working to hold lawmakers accountable for their actions.”
AFP launched a mail campaign highlighting the disparity of Maine’s lawmakers giving themselves a 61% pay raise while raising taxes on everyone else and increasing spending with little accountability to the people footing the bill.
