ARLINGTON, VA— Following Energy Secretary Chris Wright’s comments on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” indicating the administration is “open to all ideas” to lower the cost of gas, Americans for Prosperity renewed its call for policymakers to prioritize lowering costs for American families and bringing the conflict with Iran to a close.
Gas prices have surged dramatically in recent weeks, with ripple effects spreading across food, transportation, and household budgets. AFP warned that every additional day of instability abroad increases the financial strain facing families and small businesses here at home — especially as affordability continues to dominate voter concerns heading into the midterm elections.
AFP Chief Goverment Affairs Officer Brent Gardner issued the following statement:
“Secretary Wright is right to consider every option to bring down prices at the pump, including temporary relief from the federal gas tax, but Americans need much more than modest relief around the edges. The American people overwhelmingly want a path toward stability, and Washington should pursue every avenue to wind down hostilities, restore certainty to global energy markets, and refocus on what voters consistently rank as their top priorities: lowering costs, expanding opportunity, and strengthening the economy at home. The longer this conflict drags on, the greater the risk of prolonged economic pain.”
Earlier this year, AFP released a broader Affordability Agenda focused on expanding domestic energy production, reducing regulatory barriers, increasing housing supply, improving patient choice in health care, and lowering costs throughout the economy — without raising taxes or increasing government spending — priorities that Americans are demanding from Washington right now.
Through broad-based grassroots outreach, Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is driving long-term solutions to the country’s biggest problems. AFP activists engage friends and neighbors on key issues and encourage them to take an active role in building a culture of mutual benefit, where people succeed by helping one another. AFP recruits and unites activists in all 50 states behind a common goal of advancing policies that will help people improve their lives. For more information, visit www.AmericansForProsperity.org
