TOPEKA, KS – Today, Americans for Prosperity-Kansas (AFP-KS) praised the Kansas House and Senate for their override of three vetoes by Governor Laura Kelly on key legislation to expand school choice, cut red tape for businesses, and protect free speech.
AFP-KS issued a “key vote alert” ahead of Thursday’s override votes for SB30, requiring any new business licenses to be approved by the state legislature. The alert also urged the House to pass “The Kirk Act” (HB2333), a bill named in honor of free speech champion Charlie Kirk that protects the First Amendment rights of students and student organizations at Kansas public colleges and universities.
Legislators also overcame Kelly’s veto on legislation (HB2468) that will have Kansas participate in the Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA), allowing thousands of Kansas students to access more personalized education options through a federal tax credit.
Tanner Tempel, AFP-KS deputy state director, gave the following statement:
“We’re grateful to the policy champions in the state legislature for their definitive rebuke of Governor Kelly for her irresponsible actions this session. It’s clear from these overrides that she’s completely out of touch with Kansas values.
“AFP-KS is dedicated to empowering every Kansan to live, speak, and work freely. These bills are the kind of commonsense reforms we expect to lawmakers to take across the finish line every year until Kansas is the freest state in the Union.”
