Columbia, SC – Americans for Prosperity–South Carolina (AFP-SC) today celebrated the South Carolina General Assembly’s passage of H. 4216, landmark legislation that flattens the state’s income tax and sets South Carolina on a path toward ultimately eliminating the income tax entirely.
The legislation will trigger a flat rate of 1.99% based on revenue, which at the current rate of growth would happen in five years. 1.99% would be the lowest flat tax in the country.
As part of AFP-SC’s six-figure investment in supporting this legislation, the grassroots organization utilized door knocking, direct mail, digital and radio ads, and launched AxeTheTaxSC.com to educate South Carolinians about the bill while urging legislators to support it.
Matt Humm, AFP-SC State Director, issued the following statement:
“This is a historic moment for South Carolina taxpayers. By passing H. 4216, lawmakers took a bold step toward a simpler, fairer tax code that allows South Carolinians to keep more of what they earn. AFP-SC is proud to have contributed to building the broad support needed for such a historic a significant step toward eliminating the South Carolina Income tax
“Establishing the lowest flat income tax rate in the nation sends a clear signal that South Carolina is open for business and serious about economic growth. Although there is still work to be done to end South Carolina’s income tax, this reform will make our state more competitive, attract new investment, and create more opportunity for families and job creators across the Palmetto State.”
