AFP-Texas Launches Task Force of Local Officials for Property Tax Reform

Mar 11, 2026 by AFP

AUSTIN, TX – Today, Americans for Prosperity-Texas (AFP-TX) announced the launch of a new task force dedicated to transformational property tax reform in Texas comprised of a coalition of local elected officials, as Texas taxpayers continue to struggle with one of the highest property tax rates in the nation.

First announced at an event with Governor Greg Abbott promoting property tax relief for Texas families and businesses on Tuesday, The Lone Star Property Tax Reform Council will work to model transparent and responsive local governance and drive policy solutions like local spending caps that empower taxpayers.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott gave the following statement:

“Texas is leading the nation in growth, and we must ensure our state remains affordable. Last session, we delivered historic property tax relief to hardworking families and businesses across the state, but out-of-control local spending has eroded billions of dollars in that relief and driven property taxes higher. That must change. I look forward to working alongside AFP and the Lone Star Property Tax Reform Council as we fight to return the power to the taxpayers. We are going to turn the tables on local taxing authorities and ensure local governments live within their means to keep Texas affordable for generations to come.”

AFP-TX State Director Genevieve Collins gave the following statement:

“This coalition of local leaders is a critical element in our fight to advance transformational property tax reform in the Lone Star State. The effort shows that this campaign for reform is not anti-local government it’s just pro-taxpayer. These courageous officials will prove that not only is it possible to govern responsibly and within your means, but by law it ought to be the standard.”
