Americans for Prosperity-Michigan Blasts Governor Whitmer’s 2026 State of the State Address

LANSING, MI — Americans for Prosperity-Michigan (AFP-MI) condemned Governor Whitmer’s 2026 State of the State address, during which she set the stage for another drawn-out budget battle while ignoring the struggles of families across Michigan, who continue to grapple with rising costs and economic uncertainty.

AFP-MI State Director Tim Golding released the following statement:

“Last night, Governor Whitmer once again promoted a failed agenda that will increase the economic burden on Michigan families. Her governing approach continues to rely on government expansion rather than individual freedom.

“Tax credits and targeted incentives redirect resources through Lansing instead of addressing the root causes of high costs: overregulation and excessive spending. At a time when families are facing rising prices and economic uncertainty, the answer is not more government, but more opportunity for hardworking Michiganders.

“Whitmer’s flawed revenue-centric strategy is a warning for a prolonged budget fight with commonsense lawmakers who oppose new taxes. Preliminary budget negotiations have reportedly included discussions about tapping into Michigan’s rainy day fund. If Whitmer moves forward with this misguided decision, she would be raiding taxpayer-funded reserves to bankroll her party’s radical agenda.

“AFP-Michigan urges lawmakers to reject policies that grow government at the expense of taxpayers and instead pursue broad-based tax relief, regulatory reform, and responsible spending that empowers job creators and families across our state.”
