AFP–Montana Endorses Slate of Conservative Primary Challengers Focused on Limiting Government

Feb 5, 2026 by AFP

HELENA, MT — Americans for Prosperity–Montana (AFP–MT) today endorsed an initial slate of state legislative candidates in the Republican primary who are committed to reversing the growth of government and advancing policies rooted in freedom, responsibility, and limited government.

Despite strong expectations for conservative reform, recent legislative outcomes expanded the size, cost, and scope of government. Montanans saw the passage of a major property tax overhaul, continuation of expanded health care policy, new taxpayer-funded child care programs, government-backed housing subsidies, and a 13.5% increase in state spending.

“Montanans didn’t vote for bigger government — they voted for freedom, accountability, and common-sense policy,” said Jesse Ramos, AFP–Montana State Director. “Instead, we’ve seen a series of policies that grow government’s role in people’s lives and increase long-term taxpayer obligations.”

AFP–MT emphasized that the divide voters are feeling is about direction and policy — not party labels.

“This state was built on self-reliance and opportunity, not dependence on government programs,” Ramos said. “Montanans want solutions that empower individuals, strengthen families, and keep government within its proper limits. When policies move in the opposite direction, voters expect accountability.”

In several cases this session, some Republicans joined the Democratic caucus to pass major spending and program expansions, underscoring that the core issue is governing philosophy, not partisan identity.

AFP–Montana is endorsing the following candidates, who have demonstrated a commitment to policies that limit government and expand opportunity:

  • Zack Wirth — SD-09
  • Steve LaPraim — SD-42
  • Kathy Love — SD-43
  • Trevor Funseth — HD-21
  • Trevor Walter — HD-69
  • Trish Schreiber — HD-76

These candidates represent a shift away from policy that grows government and toward reforms that prioritize economic freedom, fiscal responsibility, and long-term prosperity for Montana families.
