Washington, DC—Today, the U.S. Senate voted to cancel billions in discretionary spending included in President Trump’s first rescission package.
Americans for Prosperity (AFP) praises this move to reduce wasteful government spending and urges the House to swiftly pass this legislation. As AFP’s Kurt Couchman recently explained in The Hill, President Trump and Congress should continue to find savings to protect taxpayers and instill fiscal responsibility in Washington.
AFP Senior Policy Fellow Kurt Couchman issued the following statement after the vote:
“The passage of the rescissions package is another welcome step in cutting wasteful federal spending, and AFP encourages the President and Congress to build on this success as a springboard for comprehensive budget reforms.
“We all know that federal spending is out of control, and the longer it goes unaddressed, the closer we get to an economic crisis. We need to change the culture in Washington and restore respect for taxpayer dollars. These rescission packages aren’t going to solve our debt crisis, but they do show a level of commitment to fiscal stewardship that has been missing for too long.
“In addition to finding further savings through rescissions, Congress must overhaul its approach to budgeting and appropriations to promote robust, bottom-up legislating and better outcomes, including getting spending and the debt under control.”
