AFP-IL Launches Statewide Digital Campaign Opposing New Taxes

SPRINGFIELD, IL — Americans for Prosperity-Illinois (AFP-IL) is joining the House Republicans’ opposition to the newly proposed taxes on services, which will have devastating impacts on Illinois families and businesses. Today, AFP-IL is launching a statewide digital campaign and grassroots efforts urging Illinoisians to contact their lawmakers to reject new service taxes.

Illinois already has the highest overall tax burdens in the country, making it far more expensive to live in than its regional neighbors. Now, lawmakers are proposing up to $2.5 billion in additional taxes on Illinoisans to help bail out mismanagement and wasteful spending across the state.

Led by Governor J.B. Pritzker, who has had historic budget increases throughout his tenure, tax-and-spend Democrats in Springfield are dreaming up new ways to tax Illinoisians. This proposal would introduce taxes on more than 80 services, including everything from vehicle repair to dating services.

AFP-IL State Director Jason Heffley issued the following statement:

“Illinois Democrats have a major spending issue, and unfortunately, their only solution is to find ways to increase taxes on families and businesses. The solution for every problem cannot be to raise existing taxes or find new ways to tax residents.

“The proposed service tax is nothing more than an admission of failure by our state’s leadership. They have taxed everything else to embarrassing levels so now they need to find new things to tax. Apparently, without shame, their new proposal is to start taxing services at the highest level in the country.”

“AFP-IL is calling on lawmakers to stop the tax increase proposals and get back to the drawing board to work on reforming government, showing fiscal restraint and passing policies that will actually grow our economy and improve the lives of all Illinoisians.”
