ANCHORAGE, AK – Today, Governor Dunleavy vetoed an education bill, HB 69. This misguided bill prioritized systems over students and provided little accountability or relief for Alaska families.
Alaskans are calling for real education reform—and HB69 simply didn’t deliver. Families want funding that directly supports students and teachers, not just school districts. They want more options for how and where their children learn, and the flexibility to tailor education to fit each student’s unique needs.
AFP-Alaska Deputy State Director Quincy Azimi-Tabrizi issued the following statement:
“Governor Dunleavy’s veto today gives a clear directive to the legislature – it’s time to go back to the drawing board and work across the aisle on an education reform proposal that doesn’t defend the current status quo.
“Let’s focus on reforms that actually help students: strengthening open enrollment, supporting public charter and correspondence programs, and ensuring every education dollar delivers value.”
