House Speaker Paul Ryan: “We’re not going to raise gas taxes”

Mar 7, 2018 by AFP

Arlington, VA – House Speaker Paul Ryan joined Americans for Prosperity President Tim Phillips tonight for a national telephone town hall discussing the many ways that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is benefiting hard-working Americans and how to build on this once-in-a-generation reform to keep America’s economy strong.

When asked about policies that could undermine tax reform, Speaker Ryan stressed that the U.S. House of Representatives will not pass a federal gas tax increase:

“Well, we’re not going to raise gas taxes so I don’t foresee that as a problem. We’re just not going to do that here. There are some people who are talking about that, but the last thing we want to do is pass historic tax relief in December and then undo that, so we are not going to raise gas taxes.”

Americans for Prosperity has been a vocal opponent of any effort to increase the federal gas tax. On January 23, AFP sent a letter to President Trump urging his opposition to any gas tax hike.

“The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 was a historic achievement, the benefits of which are already being realized. But increasing the gas tax would effectively undermine recent tax cuts by clawing back hundreds of billions of dollars—roughly 25 percent of the total benefit of tax reform—from low-and middle-income Americans at a time when they thought they were finally getting some relief,” wrote Brent Gardner, AFP’s chief government affairs officer.

BACKGROUND:

AFP made tax reform a top federal priority in 2017 and engaged its nationwide grassroots infrastructure in support of a positive vision to unrig the economy. As part of that effort, AFP held more than 100 grassroots events, which saw the organization partner with local communities, elected officials and policy experts to highlight the beneficial impact of comprehensive tax reform.

In January, AFP announced that, together with its grassroots partners, it would spend up to $20 million in 2017 and 2018 to connect the American people to the benefits of tax reform.
