Timothy R. Phillips, President
Tim Phillips, President of Americans for Prosperity and Americans for Prosperity Foundation is a veteran political strategist and one of the nation’s premier grassroots organizers with nearly two decades of experience, including presidential, gubernatorial and congressional races, as well as state legislative, local and issue-advocacy campaigns.
In 1992, Phillips managed U.S. Rep. Bob Goodlatte’s (6th Dist. – Va.) first Congressional campaign and later served as Rep. Goodlatte’s Chief of Staff on Capitol Hill for four years.
In 1997, Phillips helped found Century Strategies, one of the nation’s leading public affairs and public relations firms. Phillips was named a “Rising Star in Politics” in 1998 by Campaigns and Elections magazine.
In 2006, Phillips was named President of both Americans for Prosperity and Americans for Prosperity Foundation; one of the premier grassroots citizen lobbyist organizations in the country, focused on promoting the free-market and issues such as budget reform, lower taxes, government transparency and accountability.
Under his leadership, the organization expanded to 17 states in 2006 and launched the Ending Earmarks Express, a nationwide road tour that of lawmakers’ pet projects that traveled over 10,000 miles to the site of 50 earmarks in 37 different states from April 7, 2006 to September 22, 2006. Now AFP has chapters and staff on the ground in 24 states.
In 2007 Phillips worked to expand AFP Foundation’s impact by holding the first annual Defending the American Dream Summit, which proved to be a massive show of force for free-market values. The Summit attracted over 1,600 citizens from 35 states around the country.
This past year, Phillips has overseen two successful initiatives, the Hot Air Tour and the NoStimulus.com petition, both aimed at limiting the size and scope of government.
The Hot Air Tour was a nationwide effort aimed at educating the American public about the costs associated with global warming hysteria. Complete with a hot air balloon and $8 dollar bills featuring the face of Al Gore, this issue has once again been pushed to the forefront as legislators in Washington debate the passage of cap and trade legislation.
NoStimulus.com, was an online petition to protest the Obama Administration’s trillion dollar plus stimulus package and the out of control spending in Washington. Receiving over 300,000 signatures in a little over a week, the petition was ultimately signed by over 450,000 concerned citizens. Phillips personally went to the Capitol and delivered many of these petitions himself, urging lawmakers to vote against the legislation.
Presently, Phillips continues to work to expand AFP and AFPF’s impact by developing chapters in states around the nation and launching national initiatives in support of limited government, free-market issues. He is currently overseeing the Save My Ballot Tour, aimed at educating citizens about card-check legislation as well as initiatives to prevent the passage of cap and trade legislation.
