Right to Try Ready for President’s Signature

May 25, 2018 by AFP

This week, the House of Representatives came together in a bipartisan effort to pass Right to Try legislation that will soon extend hope to tens of thousands of terminally-ill patients and their families. For many, this bill represents their last and final chance to potentially save their own lives.

During his weekly press conference this morning, Speaker Ryan held an enrollment ceremony for a series of bills, including Right to Try, in which he said, “Because of this law, terminally-ill patients will be able to get access to experimental treatments and therapies to have a chance for a longer life. This gives families, those who have been really hurting…something that they have not been able to get: more time, and more hope.”

Joining Speaker Ryan at the ceremony was Senator Ron Johnson – a sponsor of the bill, and long a champion of Right to Try. Speaking at the ceremony, Senator Johnson remarked, “Today, with this signing…we are restoring a little bit of freedom, a little bit of hope for terminally-ill patients and their families. I can’t understate the fact that this will save people’s lives.”

House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Greg Walden added, ““This is about saving lives. This is about people who have no other choice. … and there may be an opportunity to try something that hasn’t gone all the way through the process that could save their lives.”

President Trump, who has been an advocate for Right to Try, is eager to sign the bill into law and is expected to do so in the coming days.
