Arlington, VA- Today’s vote in the House missed an opportunity to deliver real health care reform for American families—and to finally turn the page on a system that continues to drive up costs and limit choices for Americans.
Reviving Obamacare’s subsidies only entrenches a broken status quo. After more than a decade, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has failed to make health care more affordable or give patients greater control over their care. Pouring billions more into insurance company subsidies does nothing to address the root causes of rising costs or expand access to better options.
President Trump has been clear: doubling down on Obamacare is the wrong direction. He’s right—and Republicans should listen. Voters did not send Republicans to Washington to expand the ACA, but to address the broken health care system. That means rejecting these subsidies and advancing reforms that empower patients, lower costs, and put families—not insurance companies—in charge of their health care decisions.
We are grateful to the Members of the House who voted against today’s legislation and stood up for Americans who want a better health care future. Their leadership reflects a growing recognition that there is a better path forward—one focused on innovation, competition, and patient-empowering solutions like expanding and directly funding Health Savings Accounts so families have more control over how their health care dollars are spent.
Dean Clancy, Senior Policy Fellow at Americans for Prosperity, said:
“It’s time to listen to the American people. Health care costs continue to rise while options for quality care continue to shrink. Americans want solutions that give them more choice, more control, and more transparency—not more subsidies that prop up a failing system. Congress has a real opportunity to flip the script on health care affordability, and we urge lawmakers to seize it.”
Affordability cannot be associated with Obamacare or subsidies that put insurance companies in the driver’s seat—making decisions that serve their bottom line, not patients’ needs. True reform requires confronting the structural drivers of high costs and shifting power to patients and families.
Americans for Prosperity will continue working with lawmakers, stakeholders, and grassroots advocates to advance bold, patient-empowering reforms—and to ensure accountability as Congress decides whether to move forward or remain stuck in the past.
Through broad-based grassroots outreach, Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is driving long-term solutions to the country’s biggest problems. AFP activists engage friends and neighbors on key issues and encourage them to take an active role in building a culture of mutual benefit, where people succeed by helping one another. AFP recruits and unites activists in all 50 states behind a common goal of advancing policies that will help people improve their lives. For more information, visit www.AmericansForProsperity.org
