Grassroots group disappointed by Lincoln City Council vote, urges alternatives to raising taxes

LINCOLN, NE – Americans for Prosperity-Nebraska (AFP-NE), the state’s leading free-market grassroots organization, today expressed disappointment and urged the Lincoln City Council to prioritize taxpayer dollars after the Lincoln City Council voted in favor of advancing a sales tax increase proposal. The proposal would cost taxpayers $13 million annually.

AFP-NE State Director Jessica Shelburn issued the following statement:

“Tax and spend advocates are leaning into Lincoln lawmakers to severely jack up tax rates – which would inevitably hurt the least fortunate. Lincoln already has a wheel tax that was dedicated to maintaining roads, yet our elected officials want families and businesses to support a $78 million tax hike over the next six years.

“The City Council and mayor should prioritize their spending like Lincoln families do in our homes every day. The 71% increase in spending on roads since 2010 shows Lincoln has a spending and prioritization problem, not a revenue problem. We should ensure our tax dollars that were meant to maintain our infrastructure are directed to our roads and not turned into a city slush fund. We urge the Mayor and City Council to find alternatives to funding critical infrastructure without raising taxes.”
