Jackson, MS—Today, Americans for Prosperity-Mississippi (AFP-MS) is applauding the Governor for signing HB 1 into law which will reduce and gradually phase out the state income tax.

AFP-MS said that HB 1 is a pro-taxpayer bill that phases out the income tax on work by utilizing a responsible revenue trigger. This legislation also supports infrastructure funding to ensure Mississippi will be an ideal location for workers and consumers to make a living and support their families into the future.

AFP-MS State Director Starla Brown said:

“It has been a long road to get this bill over the finish line, but we’re glad to see the Governor sign it into law and praise Lieutenant Governor Hosemann, Chairman Hopson, Speaker White, Senator Harkins, and Representative Lamar for their hard work. This is the start of a new economic era for Mississippi where hardworking taxpayers can keep more of their money and invest it where they see fit. We are looking forward to the future for Mississippi taxpayers and celebrate this win today!”

The passage of HB 1 comes as AFP-MS is also working towards tax reform at the federal level with the renewal of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). Members of Congress in Washington can help Mississippi families avoid a $1,498 income tax hike by not allowing the TCJA to expire this year.
