Baton Rouge, LA—As the new legislative session began, Americans for Prosperity-Louisiana (AFP-LA) says they were encouraged to see a high priority piece of legislation be introduced quickly and pass a major vote in the Senate to restore regulatory accountability in Louisiana.
Led by State Senator Mike Reese (SD-30), SB 59 will stop unelected bureaucrats at local agencies from establishing costly laws and regulations with little accountability by requiring approval of appropriations by legislative committees for rules with fiscal impact of $200,000 per year or $1 million over five years. This legislative push is commonly referred to as the Regulations from the Executive In Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act.
AFP-LA State Director, Scott Simon, issued the following statement:
“Louisiana’s legislature is taking its role of protecting tax dollars seriously, and we’re thrilled to see early momentum behind the REINS Act. Too often, unelected agency bureaucrats are deciding rules and regulations that cost Louisiana business owners and citizens their hard-earned income. By “REINing” in the power of agencies and requiring approval by the people’s elected representatives, we’re bringing back transparent and accountable rulemaking to Louisiana. We call on the House to quickly take up SB 59 and follow the Senate’s lead.”
This year, AFP is fighting to pass REINS-style legislation in nearly two dozen states by unleashing its grassroots army to inform citizens in key regions, deploying targeted digital ads and mail campaigns, and connecting constituents with their elected representatives to demand regulatory reform.
