Americans for Prosperity Backs Presidential Veto of Costly Obamacare Subsidies

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Newsweek reports that President Trump has indicated he may veto legislation approved by the House on Thursday to reinstate Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies, should the bill advance through the Senate. Americans for Prosperity (AFP) argues that such a veto would be fully justified.

Rather than addressing the root causes of rising health care prices, the bill would send billions more in taxpayer dollars to health insurance companies, further entrenching a system that continues to drive premiums and out‑of‑pocket costs higher for American families.

“Americans don’t need another bailout for insurers dressed up as health care reform,” said Brent Gardner, Chief Government Affairs Officer at Americans for Prosperity. “This legislation pours more money into a broken ACA framework while doing nothing to increase competition, lower costs, or give patients more control over their care.”

The House-passed legislation would double down on a failing system that has already proven costly for families and taxpayers alike. As reported by Politico, Americans for Prosperity is pulling ads and suspending all grassroots activity for Republican lawmakers who voted in favor of reviving the expired Obamacare subsidies.

“President Trump’s support for directly funding patient health savings accounts isn’t just better policy, it’s also far more popular with the American people,” Gardner added. “Reinstating these subsidies only empowers insurance companies. If the Senate continues to try to revive these subsidies, the President should absolutely veto them. We continue to urge all lawmakers to focus on reforms that put patients first and truly tackle the drivers of rising health care costs.”

Americans for Prosperity continues to call on lawmakers to pursue market‑based, patient‑driven solutions that expand choice, increase transparency, and make health care more affordable for all Americans.

Through broad-based grassroots outreach, Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is driving long-term solutions to the country’s biggest problems. AFP activists engage friends and neighbors on key issues and encourage them to take an active role in building a culture of mutual benefit, where people succeed by helping one another.
