AFP-WV Announces Amplified Grassroots Movement as CON Repeal Effort Intensifies

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Americans for Prosperity-West Virginia (AFP-WV) announced today that the group will begin another statewide canvassing effort, this time to hold state lawmakers accountable who voted against repealing the state’s harmful Certificate of Need laws.

This effort marks the next phase of the organization’s ongoing accountability effort that began in the spring, comprised of direct mail, digital ads, and grassroots events across the state. The organization will knock on over 100,000 West Virginians’ doors over the coming months to educate the public about the tremendous harm CON laws are doing to health care in the Mountain State.

“Repealing certificate of need laws is quickly becoming a litmus test issue for conservatives,” said AFP-WV State Director Jason Huffman. “And the salience of this issue among voters is only going to continue to grow as we kickoff another of AFP’s signature statewide canvassing efforts. Our goal is simple: let citizens know which of their lawmakers sided with hospital CEOs trying to protect their medical fiefdoms over calls from the Trump Administration, based on overwhelming data, to create more access to better quality healthcare by repealing CON laws. West Virginians deserve better than politicians kowtowing to protectionist special interests, so we are encouraging citizens to ask those lawmakers to do better.”

“Because of our signature, permanent grassroots infrastructure, AFP is uniquely positioned to significantly expand the growing coalition calling for a full repeal of CON. Fat cat Hospital CEOs more worried about their bottom line than providing quality health care can no longer be allowed to veto competitors through big government central planning,” Huffman said.
