DENVER, CO — As Colorado’s 75th General Assembly’s first special session kicks off, Americans for Prosperity-Colorado (AFP-CO) urges Coloradans to beware of politicians’ efforts to increase spending, undercut the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR), and blame others for their failure to prioritize fiscal responsibility.
Denver Democrats have been on the offense, quick to blame the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB) for the state’s nearly $1 billion deficit that has ballooned under Governor Jared Polis. But this reduction of funds from the federal government is due to individual income tax relief for Coloradans across the state — this “shortfall” is saving the average Colorado family $3,661 on their federal bill.
But now lawmakers want to undo this federal tax break by taking even more taxpayer money to fix their overspending problem. And despite the majority of Coloradans supporting TABOR, Democrats will once again turn to gutting the decades-old law of the land to get more taxpayer money.
AFP-Colorado State Director Jesse Mallory issued the following statement:
“Congress passed a sweeping pro-growth economic package with the One Big Beautiful Bill, preventing the largest tax hike in American history and saving Coloradans thousands of dollars. But now lawmakers, led by Gov. Polis, are pointing fingers and blaming these tax cuts as the cause of our state’s massive, nearly $1 billion deficit.
“Democrat leaders in Denver are desperate for more of your hard-earned taxpayer dollars, and don’t think you deserve a break. Lawmakers want taxpayers to foot the bill for years of reckless government spending and efforts to undercut TABOR at every turn.
“AFP will continue to champion TABOR and fight for Colorado taxpayers and hold lawmakers accountable for turning their backs on us.”
