AFP Urges Polis to Veto Bill Jeopardizing Colorado Workers’ Rights

DENVER, CO — As the 2026 legislative session draws to a close, Americans for Prosperity-Colorado (AFP-CO) is urging Governor Jared Polis to veto HB26-1005, an anti-worker rights bill that undermines long-standing worker protections and strips employees of their freedom to choose whether union representation is right for them.

AFP-CO Deputy State Director Brittany Trujillo issued the following statement:

“AFP-CO urges Governor Polis to prioritize Colorado worker rights over union special interests by vetoing HB26-1005. Polis has vetoed this bill in the past, and Coloradans are counting on him to protect their freedom of association once again.

“This bill threatens Colorado’s economy by increasing labor costs and reducing flexibility for employers, making the state less competitive and discouraging job creation. At a time when families are already struggling to make ends meet, HB26-1005 would fuel inflation and drive up costs for small businesses and consumers alike.”

Through a grassroots campaign contacting voters across the state, AFP-CO is urging Coloradans to sign onto a letter urging the Governor to support worker choice and oppose HB26-1005.

BACKGROUND:

For decades, Colorado has protected workers’ rights to decide for themselves—without coercion—whether to join a union and pay union dues. HB26-1005 weakens those protections and tilts the balance of power away from individual workers and toward special interests. This bill would allow workers to be pressured into union representation and forced to financially support organizations and political activities with which they may fundamentally disagree. No worker should be compelled to give up a portion of their paycheck to fund causes or agendas they do not support.

At its core, HB26-1005 diminishes the constitutional principle of freedom of association and removes critical safeguards that ensure workers have a meaningful voice in decisions that directly impact their livelihoods.
