AFP Urges Lawmakers to Hold the Line on TABOR as Legislative Session Begins

DENVER, CO — As the Colorado General Assembly convenes for the 2026 legislative session, Americans for Prosperity-Colorado (AFP-CO) is calling on lawmakers to respect the will of Colorado taxpayers and hold the line on the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, one of the most strongly supported voter-approved protections in the state’s history.

For more than three decades, TABOR has ensured that taxpayers, not politicians, decide when the government takes more money from working families. Polling consistently shows that roughly seventy percent of Coloradans support TABOR across party lines and regions of the state. Yet year after year, lawmakers introduce proposals designed to weaken, bypass, or permanently retain taxpayer refunds without voter consent.

“TABOR is not a loophole. It is the law, and it reflects the clear and overwhelming will of Colorado voters,” said Brittany Trujillo, AFP-CO Deputy State Director. “As families continue to face higher costs for housing, groceries, and energy, now is not the time for politicians to keep money that belongs to taxpayers.”

Throughout the legislative session, Americans for Prosperity Colorado will actively educate voters on legislation that impacts their wallets and economic freedom, hold lawmakers accountable for votes that undermine TABOR and taxpayer protections, and engage grassroots activists across the state to ensure lawmakers hear directly from the people they represent.

Americans for Prosperity Colorado emphasized that any attempt to weaken TABOR, whether through statutory changes, accounting maneuvers, or policies that allow the state to permanently retain excess revenue, should be rejected unless approved directly by voters.

“Colorado families are tightening their belts,” Trujillo continued. “State government should do the same. If lawmakers believe they need more money, they should make their case honestly to voters, not quietly rewrite the rules.”

Americans for Prosperity Colorado will provide regular updates throughout the session, including legislative alerts, accountability efforts, and opportunities for citizens to engage directly with their elected officials.

Coloradans deserve transparency, respect for the law, and a legislature that remembers who the money belongs to.
