ARLINGTON, VA— Americans for Prosperity (AFP) today called for an immediate end to the ongoing partial government shutdown amid the rising security concerns across the United States and abroad, warning that continued dysfunction in Washington could prove catastrophic at a time when American families, businesses and communities are relying on their government to keep them safe.
The shutdown has disrupted services, strained federal workers, and created avoidable uncertainty in areas that Americans depend on every day, while serving no purpose other than to hamstring agencies focused on safety and security to make a political point.
“As the United States enters a heightened alter environment following military strikes in Iran, it’s more important than ever that the Department of Homeland Security is fully funded and fully operational,” said Managing Director of Americans for Prosperity, Kent Strang. “This Democrat driven shutdown puts Americans at risk and accomplishes nothing except punishing federal workers who are being asked to miss another paycheck. Withholding funding from DHS isn’t just irresponsible, given today’s security environment, it’s inexcusable.”
AFP noted that Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers are set to miss their first round of paychecks later this week, a development that has lawmakers in both parties bracing for rising absences at the agency and growing lines at airports around the country. Disruptions to airport security operations would not only inconvenience travelers and hurt local economies but also create avoidable vulnerabilities in the nation’s transportation infrastructure.
In addition, heightened concerns over the risk of domestic attacks motivated by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East underscore the urgency of restoring full funding. At a time of increased threat awareness, weakening or destabilizing critical security functions is particularly dangerous. Ensuring that frontline personnel are supported and fully operational is not optional—it is essential to safeguarding the homeland.
AFP emphasized that policy disputes—no matter how serious—must be resolved through negotiation and open debate, not through brinkmanship that puts the country at risk.
Rather than prolonging a damaging standoff, AFP is urging Democrats in Congress to end this needless standoff and pass the necessary funding legislation to restore full government operations. AFP also reiterated its support for permanent reforms, including the Prevent Government Shutdowns Act, to ensure the country is never again pushed to the brink by recurring funding crises.
Through broad-based grassroots outreach, Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is driving long-term solutions to the country’s biggest problems. AFP activists engage friends and neighbors on key issues and encourage them to take an active role in building a culture of mutual benefit, where people succeed by helping one another. AFP recruits and unites activists in all 50 states behind a common goal of advancing policies that will help people improve their lives. For more information, visit www.AmericansForProsperity.org
