WASHINGTON, DC – In response to the U.S. Senate vote last night that fell short of passing the “Eliminate Shutdowns Act” sponsored by U.S. Senator Ron Johnson, AFP Chief Government Affairs Officer Brent Gardner issued the following statement:

“Washington had a clear opportunity to end the cycle of manufactured government shutdowns and too many senators chose not to. Senator Johnson’s legislation offered a simple, commonsense solution: automatic funding measures that would keep the government open and functioning while Congress does its job. Instead, many lawmakers opted to preserve the dysfunction.

“These shutdowns are entirely of Washington’s own making. They’re not inevitable, they’re not strategic—they’re self-inflicted wounds that often leave a trail of collateral damage to families and businesses. Americans overwhelmingly oppose shutdowns and support reforms that hold Congress accountable. Yet, despite bipartisan public support for ending crisis-to-crisis legislating, the Senate failed to act.

“Americans for Prosperity will continue to strongly advocate for policies like the Eliminate Shutdowns Act and the Prevent Government Shutdowns Act that take shutdowns off the table for good. The American people deserve better than this political theater. It’s time for Congress to stop playing games and start governing responsibly.”
