COLUMBUS, OH – Americans for Prosperity–Ohio (AFP-OH) today commended the Ohio House of Representatives for voting to override Governor DeWine’s veto of key property tax reforms in House Bill 96. With a 61-28 vote, lawmakers took an important step toward restoring fairness and accountability for Ohio property owners on one of many necessary reforms – overriding Gov. DeWines veto of Item 66 (School District Property Tax Levy Restrictions).
AFP-OH State Director Donovan O’Neil released the following statement:
“Governor DeWine’s misguided vetoes—cheered on by progressive Democrats and quietly enabled by some Republicans—sought to paper over Ohio’s property tax crisis rather than confront it. Today, the Ohio House took an important first step in rejecting that broken approach. While this vote today is far from the finish line, it represents real momentum toward delivering structural relief and restoring balance for taxpayers across our state. AFP-Ohio applauds the House for standing with Ohioans—not the bureaucracy—and we urge the Senate to act swiftly. We’re ready to help make the case to every corner of the Buckeye State that real reform can’t wait.”
In just two weeks since the announcement of a special session, AFP–Ohio launched a $50,000 grassroots campaign to educate citizens, activate supporters, and drive pressure on lawmakers to support the overrides:
The AFP-OH Telephone Townhall series served as a critical public education tool and mobilization platform, featuring regional and state leaders who spoke directly to thousands of Ohioans about the importance of overriding the property tax vetoes.
“We’ve heard from Ohioans across the state that they want property tax reform,” added O’Neil. “These town halls helped elevate Buckeye Blueprint champions and gave citizens a direct line to action.”
AFP–Ohio was the leading outside group lobbying for the overrides and will continue to drive momentum heading into the Senate vote.
