ALBUQUERQUE, NM – This evening, the Albuquerque City Council will consider raising the city’s gross receipts tax (GRT) by 0.4875%, hiking taxes on hardworking New Mexicans already facing an affordability crisis. Americans for Prosperity-New Mexico (AFP-NM) Grassroots Engagement Director Bobbi Curtis will speak at the meeting, urging councilmembers to oppose the proposal.

“My name is Bobbi Curtis. I’m a long-time Albuquerque resident and I’m with Americans for Prosperity, a grassroots organization that advocates for lower taxes, and less government for all New Mexicans .

“We urge you to vote no on the proposed gross receipts tax increase.

“The GRT is a regressive tax that disproportionately hurts low-income families the most. At a time when many New Mexicans are already facing an affordability crisis, increasing taxes on everyday goods and services is simply the wrong approach.

“This proposal also comes at a difficult time. We’ve just come out of a legislative session where vehicle registration fees increased by 25%, and residents are already dealing with rising gas prices and higher costs across the board.

“Albuquerque families are already being asked to do more with less. They don’t need another tax increase. They need relief.”
