AFP-Nebraska Launches Live Tally of Taxpayer Cost for Special Legislative Session

Jul 25, 2024 by AFP

LINCOLN, NE – As Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen convenes the state legislature for a special session today to work on his unpopular tax bill, Americans for Prosperity-Nebraska (AFP-NE) has launched a webpage to keep a running tally of the session’s cost to taxpayers and keep lawmakers accountable.

In addition to creating the largest tax increase in Nebraska’s history, the special session itself could cost up to $500,000, according to AFP’s estimates.

The webpage includes a form for Nebraskans to write their state representatives to “vote for real tax relief, not another tax hike.”

AFP-NE State Director, John Gage, gave the following statement:

This special session is adding insult to injury for hardworking Nebraskans, who now have to pay even more money just for the state legislature to give the governor another ‘no’ on his record-breaking tax hike.

“If Nebraskans didn’t already hate this bill, now they’re going to see just how much of their money is being spent for lawmakers to debate the largest tax increase in state history.”

Background:

AFP-NE commissioned two public opinion polls during the 2024 legislative session that found widespread opposition to Pillen’s tax plan.
