AFP-Montana Launches Campaign Holding Lawmakers Accountable for Weakening Medicaid, Strengthening Obama’s Legacy

BOZEMAN, MT — Today, Americans for Prosperity-Montana (AFP-MT) launched a campaign targeting members of the Montana State House and Senate for voting in favor of Medicaid expansion, which would weaken the vital program for those who rely on it.

Instead of standing with conservative patriots fighting to safeguard Medicaid, lawmakers chose to side with Obama’s legacy and doubled down on extending coverage to single, able-bodied, childless adults — all while hardworking Montanans are left to fit the bill.

The accountability campaign targets lawmakers like Reps. Llew Jones and Dave Bedey and Sens. Wendy McKamey and Shelley Vance who voted in favor of HB 245 to re-authorize Medicaid expansion and against SB 62, which would have capped and phased out the irresponsible expansion of Medicaid in the state. This campaign is an extension of AFP-MT’s ongoing campaign to highlight and hold lawmakers accountable for their votes on critical legislation facing the legislature.

AFP-Montana has long opposed Medicaid expansion, a vital part of Obamacare, dating back to 2013, when the chapter lobbied against and defeated it. It passed in 2015 with moderate Republican sponsorship and votes and was re-authorized twice with a coalition of moderate Republicans and Democrats supporting it.

AFP-MT State Director Jesse Ramos issued the following statement:

“Members who supported the expansion of Medicaid in the state have weakened the program for those Montanans who rely on Medicaid for quality, stable health care.

“The veneer of work requirements is not enough to justify the bad policy of Medicaid expansion. In order to ensure the fiscal solvency of Medicaid, we must ensure it serves those who truly need it — low-income, disabled, and other individuals and children who rely on the program.

“AFP’s accountability campaign targets lawmakers who chose to side with Obama’s legacy over Montana’s taxpayers and Medicaid recipients. AFP will deploy mail, digital and grassroots efforts across Big Sky Country to hold these members accountable for damaging Montana’s health care system.

Deputy State Director Henry Kriegel added:

“Medicaid expansion is bad health policy and bad economic policy. Instead, AFP supports the personal option, which allows individuals affordable care and access to health care professionals they trust, which is what the President wants by creating and funding Health Savings Accounts, not a system that is largely government-run, consolidates services in hospitals, and benefits insurance companies.”
