LANSING, MI — Americans for Prosperity–Michigan (AFP–MI) hosted a tele-town hall with Congressman John James to discuss Michigan’s growing housing affordability crisis and policy solutions to help working families achieve the American Dream of homeownership.

During the call, Congressman James outlined stark realities facing Michigan families:

“Homeownership is becoming out of reach not because Michiganders aren’t working hard, but because bad policy is driving up costs,” said Rep. James. “Between nearly $94,000 in regulatory costs already baked into new homes and additional building mandates being pushed in Lansing, families are being locked out of the market.”

Rep. James also highlighted his Path to Affordable Homes Act, legislation designed to rein in federal red tape and ensure future housing codes meet common-sense standards, including cost-effectiveness, energy efficiency, feasibility, reliability, and neutrality. The bill aims to increase housing supply, reduce unnecessary costs, and make it easier for anyone on a fixed income to afford a home.

AFP-MI State Director Tim Golding released the following statement, praising Rep. James’ leadership:

“Michigan families are paying the price for years of government overreach, and housing costs are a prime example. Congressman James is offering a common-sense solution that puts families first by cutting red tape, increasing housing supply, and allowing the free market to work. That’s how we ease the financial strain on families and help more Michiganders build generational wealth.”

The tele-town hall provided Michiganders with an opportunity to hear directly from Rep. James about housing policy and ask questions about how lawmakers can lower costs and expand opportunity across the state.

Americans for Prosperity–Michigan remains committed to advancing policies that remove barriers to opportunity, empower families, and protect the American Dream of homeownership for future generations.
