LANSING, MI – Americans for Prosperity–Michigan (AFPMI) today launched a new digital campaign to hold Senator Gary Peters accountable for refusing to vote in favor of legislation that would reopen the government and fully fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Michigan’s Democratic senators, Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin, are playing politics with national security by holding critical government funding hostage.

AFP-MI State Director Tim Golding issued the following statement:

“Michigan residents expect common sense and accountability from their leaders in Washington. As TSA officers receive their first $0 paycheck and this shutdown drags on, the consequences of political dysfunction are becoming impossible to ignore.

“Instead of backing a straightforward plan to reopen the government and ensure the Department of Homeland Security can fully do its job, Senators Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin are choosing political obstruction—prolonging a shutdown that puts unnecessary strain on security operations and the workers who keep our country running.

“From Detroit to the Upper Peninsula, Michigan families understand that national security should never be used as a political pawn. Yet by refusing to support legislation that restores full DHS funding, Peters and Slotkin are doing exactly that. Michiganders deserve better.”

AFP is calling for an immediate end to the ongoing partial government shutdown amid rising security concerns across the United States and abroad, warning that continued dysfunction in Washington could prove catastrophic at a time when American families, businesses, and communities are relying on their government to keep them safe.
