AFP-MI Calls Out Gov. Whitmer for Irresponsible State Budget

LANSING, MI – Today, Americans for Prosperity-Michigan (AFP-MI) criticized Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s proposed state budget as a reckless spending spree that will fail to remedy the state’s nearly $900 million budget gap.

AFP-MI State Director Tim Golding released the following statement:

“Governor Whitmer says that she is focused on lowering costs and making life more affordable for Michiganders, but her actions suggest otherwise. Her latest budget proposal calls for creating new taxes and fees that Michigan families cannot afford. Moreover, her solution to the state’s literary crisis is to throw more money at the issue. This approach is clearly misguided, as Michigan has spent more than $1 billion on education over the last decade as its fourth-grade reading proficiency level has fallen to 44th among all states.

“AFP-MI calls on the legislature to protect its power of the purse and negotiate a budget that helps Michiganders, not hurts them.”
