AFP Launches Beltway Ad Campaign Telling Congress to End Biden COVID Credits

“Temporary COVID subsidies reward insurance companies, encourage fraud, and waste billions of dollars while failing to care for families and people who need it.”

ARLINGTON, VA— Americans for Prosperity (AFP) today announced the launch of a six-figure ad campaign urging Congress to let the temporary Obamacare subsidies that were enacted to help Americans get through COVID expire at the end of the year. In 2021 and 2022, Obamacare’s subsidies were substantially raised and expanded to encompass more enrollees. They were meant as a temporary COVID fix. But COVID is over, and Americans are now back to work. There is no need to let the subsidies continue beyond the end of the year.

Furthermore, these higher subsidies created perverse incentives that led to 12 million “phantom” enrollees who never used their coverage, and yet health insurance companies are being paid tens of billions to cover them. It’s time that Washington put patients first by letting these inflated subsidies expire.

“President Biden’s expansions of the Affordable Care Act tax credit took advantage of the COVID crisis to put government insurance subsidies on steroids,” said Dean Clancy, AFP’s Senior Fellow on Health Policy.  “The pandemic ended two years ago. And yet Democrats are now demanding that these massive, inflationary, and fraud-prone handouts to health insurance companies be permanent. That would be a huge mistake. Congress needs to do better by focusing on real health care reforms that lower costs and put families — not insurers or the government — in charge.”

AFP’s Senior Legislative Affairs Liaison Lauren Stewart remarked, “Demanding that an extra $400 billion in handouts to insurers be forced into a short-term funding bill is unfair, unreasonable, and untenable. And quite frankly, it seems like pretty bad politics to put insurer profits over American families who currently see one-third of their medical claims denied while having to pay tens of thousands of dollars each year in out-of-pocket costs. It’s irresponsible, and an example of why Americans have become so disillusioned when it comes to health care and government.”
