BATON ROUGE, La. – Americans for Prosperity-Louisiana (AFP-LA) applauds the House Committee on Commerce for advancing HB562, which addresses Louisiana’s antiquated and over-burdensome occupational licensing regulations.  The bill aims to reduce the many of the unnecessary fees and training programs that discourage Louisianans from working while still keeping consumers safe.

“Advancing this bill is the first step to empowering Louisianans by encouraging work and self-fulfillment,” said AFP-LA State Director John Kay. “The excellent work done by this committee lays the ground work for what could be the most impactful legislation this session. Allowing more people to work by reducing excessive fees and unnecessary training requirements will only benefit Louisianans looking to provide for their families but also raise revenue for the state. We are excited that putting more people to work in Louisiana is a bipartisan effort.”

The bill creates sunset and sunrise reviews of current and potential occupational licenses, mandating reports analyzing new and existing licenses to make sure they use the “least restrictive regulation to protect consumers from present, significant, and empirically substantiated harms threatening public health and safety.”
