TOPEKA, KS – Americans for Prosperity-Kansas (AFP-KS) called out Governor Laura Kelly’s poor handling of the economy after her State of the State address on Tuesday and released its 2026 legislative agenda to counter her harmful policies.

Elizabeth Patton, Regional Director for Americans for Prosperity in Kansas, gave the following statement:

“Gov. Kelly took credit for many policies she vetoed repeatedly including providing tax cuts to Kansas families and cutting red tape to ensure affordability. These were successful policies delivered by the legislature in spite of Gov. Kelly.

“If Kansas is going to have a strong economy, we must not throw money at broken government programs and instead continue to focus on real policy solutions.”

As the legislative session begins, AFP-KS is urging lawmakers to take up key reforms that will expand opportunity and prosperity in the Sunflower State. AFP-KS’s top legislative priorities for the 2026 legislative session include:

  • Housing affordability: legalizing “missing middle” housing, enabling mixed-use development in commercial zones, eliminating single-family-only zoning, and repealing counterproductive policies like rent control and mandatory inclusionary zoning.
  • Energy reform: prioritize affordability by reducing the regulation and mandates that threaten household budgets and economic competitiveness across Kansas.
  • Reduce regulatory red tape: modernize the rulemaking process through digital submissions, streamlining outdated statutes and filings, and implementing sunset reviews to ensure regulations remain relevant and effective.
  • Eliminate government waste: in the budget so Kansans can realize the tax reform passed last session or to put more money back in people’s pockets.
