The effort began April 1st and will culminate on Tax Day, April 17th, with grassroots events taking place across the country during the countdown.
The enactment of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was the first time in a generation that Congress has successfully overhauled the tax code. Opponents of tax reform sought to block this effort at every turn and have consistently advocated for policies that place higher taxes and greater fiscal burdens on the American people. In doing so, they championed the status quo, which favored handouts to special interests and wasteful spending over allowing Americans to keep more of what they earn.
To celebrate the end of this era, AFP is saying “goodbye and good riddance” to the old tax code and will spend the next 17 days highlighting positive changes to the tax code while also urging Congress to preserve these pro-growth reforms.

AFP President Tim Phillips issued the following statement:
“This time next year, Americans will file their tax returns under a new tax code that will bring bigger paychecks, more jobs and greater investment in a growing economy.
“While Congress still has work to do to protect and build on the positive changes to the tax code, the reforms passed last December are a big step in the right direction and Americans will continue to feel the benefits.”
BACKGROUND:
AFP made tax reform a top federal priority in 2017 and engaged its nationwide grassroots infrastructure in support of a positive vision to unrig the economy. As part of that effort, AFP held more than 100 grassroots events, which saw the organization partner with local communities, elected officials and policy experts to highlight the beneficial impact of comprehensive tax reform.
In January, AFP announced that, together with its grassroots partners, it would spend up to $20 million in 2017 and 2018 to drive action around the benefits of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and ways to build on progress made through this once-in-a-generation reform. The American Pay Raise is a significant part of that effort.
The launch of American Pay Raise complements consistent and robust action focused on promoting and preserving Congress’s historic achievement in December.
