AFP Commends Efforts to Break the Cycle of Needless Government Shutdowns

Arlington, VA — Americans for Prosperity applauds the leadership of Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., and Rep. Jodey Arrington, R-Texas, for introducing legislation to finally break the cycle of shutdown politics and hold Washington accountable for the situation of its own making, where American taxpayers always lose.

“The looming threat of a government shutdown and the blame-game that follows pushes members to vote for bills they would never support under normal circumstances. This is a manufactured political crisis that almost always results in bad policy. We commend Senator Lankford and Representative Arrington for proposing the Prevent Government Shutdowns Act,” said Kurt Couchman, Senior Fellow in Fiscal Policy, Americans for Prosperity. “Passing this commonsense legislation is long overdue.”

Americans for Prosperity’s Chief Government Affairs Officer Brent Gardner remarked, “Shutdown politics are the worst kind of politics because American taxpayers always lose. It’s time for Washington to do the right thing and take this important step toward breaking free from crisis-to-crisis policymaking.”

Americans for Prosperity has long supported the removal of these threats to make Washington work better. AFP looks forward to working with leadership in both parties to avoid this shutdown and any future threats of a shutdown.
