AFP Calls out Governor Murphy’s Non-Answer on New Jersey Independent Contractor Proposal

Oct 7, 2025 by AFP

Trenton, NJ – In response to Governor Murphy declining to comment on a proposal that could reclassify independent contractors as regular employees, Americans for Prosperity-NJ (AFP-NJ) is calling on the state’s Democratic leadership to take a clear stand and commit to reducing government oversight and expanding economic opportunity for New Jerseyans.

AFP Northeast Regional Director Ross Connolly released the following statement:

“It is completely unacceptable for Governor Murphy to give a non-answer when asked about an issue that directly impacts the economic well-being of New Jerseyans. Allowing this independent contractor proposal to advance would cause needless overregulation and spike unemployment rates across the state. Governor Murphy and his Democrat allies are creating unnecessary roadblocks to employment and must begin to listen to the voice of their constituents who overwhelmingly value flexibility, autonomy, and freedom in how they work. Governor Murphy must stop dodging the issue and start defending the people he was elected to serve.”
