AFP Applauds House Passage of CR, Urges Senate to Act Swiftly to Keep Government Open

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Americans for Prosperity (AFP) supports House Republicans for passing a continuing resolution (CR) that would prevent a government shutdown at the end of this month. The legislation maintains current funding levels and includes targeted security enhancements for lawmakers, executive and judiciary, extending government funding through November 21.

“The House has done its job to keep the government open—now the Senate must do the same,” said Brent Gardner, AFP’s Chief Government Affairs Officer. “This continuing resolution is not a long-term fix, but it is a necessary action to prevent unnecessary disruption to Americans’ lives. The Senate owes it to the American people to not play political games, act responsibly, and pass this bill without delay.”

While AFP supports this short-term measure to avoid immediate harm, we continue to advocate for structural reforms that address the root causes of recurring budget crises. This CR is a stop-gap measure that ultimately leads to the same shutdown threat at the end of November. AFP is calling on lawmakers to pass the Prevent Government Shutdowns Act, a proposal that would implement automatic continuing resolutions so the government would stay open and operating.

“Washington’s shutdown cycle is a symptom of a broken budget process,” Gardner continued. “Every year, we see the same last-minute scramble that produces rushed, flawed legislation. Americans deserve better than crisis governance.”

AFP urges members of both parties to support meaningful reform and commit to a more responsible, transparent, and timely budget process. The time for short-term fixes and political finger-pointing is over—Congress must start putting the American people first.
