AFP Applauds General Assembly for Overriding Governor Stein’s Vetoes of Crucial Policies

RALEIGH, NC — Today, North Carolina’s General Assembly voted to override Governor Josh Stein’s vetoes of three AFP‑endorsed reform bills: the REINS Act (HB 402), the Personal Privacy Protection Act (SB 416), and The Power Bill Reduction Act (SB 266).

These three flagship pieces of legislation reduce government overreach, empower the legislative body, and safeguard North Carolinians’ First Amendment rights. AFP-North Carolina intends to deploy a mail, grassroots, and digital campaign targeting lawmakers who voted against these bills and applauding leaders who supported these policies.

AFP-NC State Director Tyler Voigt released the following statement:

“North Carolinians deserve a government that is both transparent and accountable, with energy policies driven by affordability, not ideology. The REINS Act returns accountability to the people’s representatives and gives our citizens a voice in regulations that impact their lives. The legislature also acted decisively to protect privacy and free speech. Senate Bill 266 establishes a common‑sense framework for North Carolina families to keep the lights on at the lowest possible price.

“Governor Stein’s vetoes clearly prioritized his ideological preferences over the everyday concerns of hardworking taxpayers and small businesses. AFP-NC fully supports the General Assembly’s override of these vetoes and its delivery of meaningful reforms.”

Background:

  • The REINS Act creates a requirement for the state legislature to approve any regulation with a projected cost of $20M over 5 years.
  • Donor disclosure reform contained within the Personal Privacy Protection Act prohibits state agencies from collecting or disclosing nonprofit donor data and imposes penalties on activist state officials who wrongfully disclose prohibited data.
  • The Power Bill Reduction Act rescinds North Carolina’s 2030 carbon‑emissions goal to unleash American energy and save North Carolinians up to $15 billion in future utility costs.
