How to Gather Signatures for the Petition to STOP the Chicago Bears Development Subsidy

Nov 22, 2022 by Illinois Corporate Welfare Accountability Committee

Thank you for your interest in helping the Illinois Corporate Welfare Accountability Committee in fighting corporate welfare for Billionaire NFL owners and to protect the taxpayers of Arlington Heights.

The Illinois Corporate Welfare Accountability Committee needs to collect over 3,000 signatures before January 3, 2023 to get the following advisory referenda to appear on the April 4, 2023 ballot.

“Shall the Village of Arlington Heights force taxpayers to subsidize the proposed Chicago Bears football stadium and real estate development in Arlington Heights? Yes/No”

Here is the petition (CLICK HERE TO VIEW) and the rules for circulating petitions are below.

  1. The Arlington Heights Chicago Bears Tax Subsidy Referendum Petition is a nonpartisan petition. It does not matter what political party you belong to circulate the petition. You can be a registered Republican, Democrat, or independent.
  2. You must be at least 18 years of age to circulate this petition.
  3. You must personally witness all signatures made on this petition. DO NOT leave the petition form unattended where someone could sign without your observing it.
  4. Ensure the voter signing the petition actually lives in Arlington Heights and is a registered voter. You may sign your own petition if you live in Arlington Heights and are also a registered voter.
  5. All 15 lines in the petition do not have to be completed to count. If you are not able to fill an entire petition, send in the partially completed petition. Each name counts!
  6. If you learn a signature is not valid, just strike through the individual line. Bad signatures do not knock out other good signatures or invalidate a petition.
  7. A circulator who recklessly and routinely disregards the signature-gathering rules may have an entire sheet stricken even though some signatures are valid.
  8. You must sign as the circulator of the petition before a Notary Public licensed in Illinois and the Notary Public must affix his/her seal or stamp. DO NOT sign the circulator signature line unless in the presence of a notary. Most banks and libraries will notarize free of charge.
  9. If a notary is needed to notarize petitions, please contact Brian Costin at 847-513-4326
  10. Very important: DO NOT number the petition page. They will be numbered later.
