Douglas County Tax Hike Fails, Residents Will Keep More of Their Money

Americans for Prosperity-Kansas, broad coalition, worked to defeat tax increase

Topeka, KS – Americans for Prosperity-Kansas (AFP-KS) celebrates the defeat of a tax increase that would have unnecessarily burdened Douglas County residents. Following efforts by AFP-KS, NAACP, Justice Matters, Kansas Appleseed and Lawrence Sunset Alliance to educate voters about the flawed proposal, this broad coalition is pleased that Douglas County residents will be able to keep more of their hard-earned money.

“This increase would have driven up the cost of things like groceries and other everyday items which hurts Kansans – particularly those living paycheck to paycheck,” said Ian Fury, Field Director for AFP-KS. “Our local activists worked tirelessly to make sure Douglas County residents were heard. By voting down this proposal, Kansans made it clear that they don’t want more taxes. We hope elected officials, at all levels of government, will instead work to lower the tax burden on Kansas families.”

The proposal from Douglas County would have increased the sales tax 5.3%, which would have cost taxpayers $50 million. Local AFP-KS activists contacted thousands of Douglas County residents leading up to yesterday’s vote.
