Key Vote Alert: Vote NO on H.R. 1834 The Jeffries Obamacare Bailout bill

Dear Representative,

On behalf of Americans for Prosperity’s grassroots volunteers and supporters across the nation, we urge you to vote “NO” on H.R. 1834, the Jeffries Obamacare Bailout bill, which would reinstate, for an additional three years and without any reforms, the temporary, pandemic-era Biden Covid Credits that expired on January 1st, at a cost to taxpayers of more than $30 billion a year.

Congress allowed the Covid Credits to expire as scheduled because they were excessively costly, inflationary, and fraud-prone, and because the pandemic is past. First enacted by Democrats in 2021, and extended by them in 2022, the Biden handouts made millionaires eligible for taxpayer subsidies and eliminated the requirement that everyone should contribute at least a little to the cost of their coverage. Every penny of the subsidies went straight to insurance companies rather than to patients. During the first two years of the handouts’ existence, Obamacare enrollment doubled and millions of “phantom enrollees” appeared who never used their health insurance. Many enrollments were fraudulent, as confirmed by the Paragon Health Institute and the Government Accountability Office.

Reinstating the expired handouts would not make health care affordable, it would only mask Obamacare’s failures. Under the “Affordable” Care Act, insurance premiums have tripled, deductibles have doubled, access to doctors and hospitals has shrunk, and insurer claim-denial rates have grown tenfold. The average family insurance plan now costs $27,000 a year and requires you to pay $5,000 to $10,000 out of pocket before the insurer even pays a penny for your care. Meanwhile, insurers deny one out of five medical claims, and some deny one-third of claims. Patients are being denied needed care.

While the subsidy levels have returned to 2020 levels, they remain extremely generous, covering 80 percent, on average, of the cost of a health insurance policy. Instead of doubling down on failure, Congress should enact free-market reforms that reduce prices by empowering patients to drive competition. Instead of more taxpayer subsidies, Congress should give Americans a Personal Option: reliable, hassle-free health care you can afford.

Reinstating the Biden Credits would take us in the wrong direction on affordability. We urge you to vote “NO” on H.R. 1834, the Jeffries Obamacare Bailout.
