WASHINGTON, DC — As Congress debates another short-term continuing resolution (CR) to avoid a government shutdown, Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is calling out the misplaced priorities driving the urgency behind this measure.
“Let’s be clear: When the House of Representatives passed a clean continuing resolution through November 21st, almost no Democrats joined them.” said Kurt Couchman, Senior Policy Fellow at Americans for Prosperity. “In the Senate, same story, Senate Democrats had their preferred alternatives which would add another 1.5 trillion dollars in wasteful spending among other provisions.” The current opposition to the CR is not about protecting patients or improving government services—it’s about preserving insurer profits and shielding entrenched interests from scrutiny. This approach does nothing to address the root causes of our broken budget process. “The urgency to drum this up in a short-term CR is in the best interest of insurer profits, not patients,” Couchman added. “Americans deserve a transparent, responsible budget process—not last-minute deals that prioritize special interests over real solutions.” AFP continues to advocate for the Prevent Government Shutdowns Act, a reform that would implement automatic continuing resolutions and require lawmakers to remain in Washington until appropriations work is complete. This commonsense legislation would end the cycle of manufactured crises and restore accountability to the budget process. Click here to watch the video.
