Jackson, MS – Today, Americans for Prosperity–Mississippi (AFP–MS) expressed gratitude to Senator Joseph M. Seymour for sponsoring Senate Bill 2646: Administrative Rules, a Mississippi REINS Act. This legislation will restore accountability in government by strengthening legislative oversight of the rulemaking process.

SB 2646 would require Mississippi state agencies to notify all members of the state legislature and include a detailed economic impact statement before adopting new administrative rules. By ensuring elected officials are fully informed about the cost and scope of proposed regulations, SB 2646 will promote transparency, protect taxpayers, and prevent unelected bureaucrats from unilaterally imposing costly rules.

AFP-MS State Director Starla Brown released the following statement:

“Too often, major policy decisions are made behind closed doors by agencies with little input from the legislature or the public. Senator Seymour has introduced a bill to ensure that the rules and regulations that become law are created by state legislators, not unelected bureaucrats.

“By requiring agencies to explain the real economic impact of their rules and notify lawmakers before moving forward, administrative rules protect taxpayers and ensure regulations aren’t put in place without proper oversight. This is a commonsense step toward a more transparent, accountable government in the Magnolia State.

“AFP-MS stands in strong support of SB 2646 and will work alongside the Mississippi Legislature to ensure this bill passes with overwhelming support.”
