Olympia, WA — Americans for Prosperity (AFP) hosted a telephone town hall on Wednesday evening with State Senator Braun and State Representative Stokesbary to discuss SB 6346, legislation that would create an income tax in Washington. The telephone town hall allowed Washingtonians the opportunity to learn more about the consequences of the proposal and to ask lawmakers directly how it could impact them.

AFP Western Region Director Heather Andrews released the following statement:

“Last night, we heard directly from Washingtonians about their concerns about how the proposed income tax could affect their families, jobs, and businesses. Senator Braun and Representative Stokesbary have been steadfast in their opposition to this bill, and we are proud to partner with them to educate and connect Washington with the facts about what this proposal could mean for our state’s future.”

During the call, Senator Braun discussed what the bill represents and the long-term risk it poses for Washington:

This is not a millionaire’s income tax—it’s just an income tax. Right now, it includes a million‑dollar deduction, but all it takes is a simple statutory change next year or whenever they decide to do it to ratchet that down.

“There’s nothing that keeps them from lowering the deduction to $500,000, or $250,000, or $100,000. There is every reason to think they will, based on how they’ve structured the budget and their demand for future revenue.

Representative Stokesbary on the economic consequences:

This tax will devastate Washington’s economy. Businesses large and small are already deciding not to invest here, and many are preparing to move jobs out of state. That’s bad for everyone.
