Rescissions Package Provides Congress Opportunity to Reduce Government Waste

This week, the White House will send a $9.4 billion rescissions package to Congress — an important step toward permanently cementing the administration’s efforts to reduce wasteful government spending. The proposed cuts target public media and foreign aid spending that puts ideological agendas ahead of our nation’s best interests.

This is exciting news for American taxpayers, who have shouldered the burden of government bloat for decades.

The Trump administration’s efforts to reduce this burden have been a welcome change, and the administration has made impressive progress rooting out government inefficiency and trimming waste. But lasting reform requires action from Congress. Otherwise, these achievements risk being undone by future administrations.

That is why this rescissions package is so critical. It presents the perfect opportunity for Congress to impose its constitutional authority over federal spending by enacting positive changes into law.

Passing the rescissions package would be a step towards restoring a limited federal government that is accountable to the people instead of one run by unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats. Once passed, lawmakers should continue the momentum and enact more laws to save taxpayer money and prevent future frivolous and burdensome spending in the long run.

With just 45 days to act once the rescissions package is introduced, Congress should move quickly to ensure this opportunity isn’t squandered. Combined with the pro-growth tax relief provisions included in the reconciliation bill currently being considered by Congress, these and other reductions in wasteful and unnecessary spending will help improve our economy and ease the debt burden on American taxpayers.
