Cut red tape, cut prices: How the SPEED Act helps affordability

Nov 25, 2025 by AFP

The House Natural Resources Committee just greenlit the SPEED Act, a bill that can help make life more affordable by cutting red tape and making sure America is once again able to build energy projects quickly and efficiently.

As the AI revolution picks up pace, America’s energy demand is soaring. However, our supply simply hasn’t kept up; as a result, our utility bills are higher than ever before.

To get prices down, we need to rapidly expand our energy infrastructure.

We have the resources and the people ready to get to work. But our slow and convoluted permitting system is keeping hundreds of energy projects stuck in limbo as they try (and many times fail) to navigate our bureaucratic maze.

But there’s a solution.

The SPEED Act, a bipartisan bill that recently advanced out of committee, will get rid of many of the hurdles that are holding our energy industry back and are working together to keep your utility bill high.

Watch AFP Managing Director Kent Strang break down what this would mean for you:

No more delays: Let’s get up to SPEED

Building in America can be a slow, bureaucratic, and sometimes impossible task.

Many energy and construction projects are stalled before the first shovel touches the ground, tangled up in layers of complex regulations.

One of the chief culprits behind this “death by delay” is the expansion of the National Environmental Policy Act from a relatively straightforward analysis of proposed projects into an intractable regulatory nightmare that takes years to complete.

Signed into law on January 1, 1970, NEPA requires federal agencies to evaluate the environmental impact of any major federal action that might have an effect on the environment.

This review has turned into a lengthy process that takes around 3.5 years to finish and produces 450-page-long reports, on average.

The SPEED Act will bring American construction forward by:

  • Setting clear NEPA review timelines
  • Defining which major federal actions need a NEPA review
  • Limiting judicial reviews
  • Streamlining bureaucracy

The SPEED Act will help cut through red tape, making it faster and cheaper to build. That means builders will see lower costs that can contribute to more affordable living for all of us.

AFP is on the ground

Permitting reform might sound like a wonky debate, but everyday Americans are feeling the real-life consequences of years of bureaucracy and red tape when they see their utility bills rise and good construction jobs dry up.

That’s why we kicked off the “Road to Prosperity” tour. We’ve been on the move across more than six states, engaging with communities about energy reform and visiting sites ranging from oil rigs and coal mines to facilities in places such as Louisiana and Wyoming.

We’ve talked to workers whose jobs depend on new projects, families who can’t afford higher energy prices, and business leaders who are tired of seeing new opportunities blocked by Washington red tape.

Everywhere we go, we hear the same thing: America wants to build. Washington just won’t let us.

Policies like the SPEED Act can change the game and get America ready for a future where we can build fast and get our economy back on track.

Tell your lawmaker to support the SPEED Act so we can expand our energy infrastructure to help bring your utility bills down.
