The broken system in Washington isn’t working for any of us.
While you’re working hard to earn enough money to get by, our elected officials aren’t doing their jobs. They fail to pass budgets on time, add billions to our national debt, and let unelected bureaucrats write the rules that shape our daily lives.
They can’t even do the bare minimum: keep the government open.
And it’s not as if there aren’t problems that should be keeping Washington busy.
Red tape and regulations are killing American jobs, our national debt is threatening our future, and many Americans no longer believe the American Dream is within reach.
That’s why Americans for Prosperity and Concerned Veterans for America launched the “Make Government Work” campaign, a seven-figure investment in digital and television to mobilize Americans so we have the government we deserve: one that’s working for the people.
Take a look at our ad launching the campaign:
We’re rolling out a nationwide push to bring some common sense back to Washington.
“Americans deserve a government that works for them — not one that wastes their money, dodges responsibility, and governs by chaos,” said Kent Strang, managing director at AFP.
How are we going to do this?
We’re getting the word out with digital and TV ads, helping folks understand how all the dysfunction in D.C. affects them.
We’re also opening a brand-new website to serve as a hub for citizens to learn, contact their lawmakers, and get involved.
The goal? Pass a set of pragmatic, targeted policy reforms that will allow the federal government to focus on bringing efficiency and accountability to the American people.
AFP’s senior government affairs liaison, Will Burger, laid out our plan to fix our broken government in his latest op-ed at The Hill.
Here are the policies that will do that:
The federal government is a bureaucratic mess.
Countless agencies are doing the same job under different acronyms, doing a bad job, and wasting billions of your tax dollars.
This bill gives Congress and the president the tools to consolidate agencies, eliminate outdated programs, and streamline operations.

The constant government shutdown drama must end.
It doesn’t help anyone, brings chaos to our political system, and distracts Congress from focusing on the issues that matter the most.
This bill will end the circus by keeping funding at current levels if Congress doesn’t pass a budget in time and by making lawmakers stay in D.C. until they get the job done.
Right now, Congress reviews the budget in bits and pieces. They spend months debating a dozen bills that account for less than a third of the government’s annual budget.
This process doesn’t make sense, and it ensures waste slips through the cracks.
This bill forces a full review of the entire federal budget so that Congress can check all its income and expenditures.
It will get Washington to make a real budget, just like we all do.
The Constitution is clear: Congress is in charge of writing our laws, not anonymous government bureaucrats.
This bill will restore power to our duly elected officials by requiring Congress to approve any regulation costing over $100 million a year.
Many states have successfully implemented REINS Act-style legislation in their governments; it’s time for Washington to follow their lead.
If we want an economy that’s not shackled by mountains of regulations, we must end bureaucratic rule and give power back where it belongs: the people.
When presidents are on their way out of office, agencies often misuse their last moments of power to push through sweeping regulations without allowing time for public debate or transparency.
It’s time to end this.
This bill would make sure the people are in control of their government by preventing unelected bureaucrats from enacting last-minute rules that bypass oversight. It would also allow Congress to review and repeal multiple regulations at once rather than forcing them to review each regulation separately.
Here’s how the Midnight Rules Relief Act works.
Washington won’t fix itself. But with bold reforms and grassroots energy, we can create real change.
Be part of the movement that’s getting Washington back on track.
