From D.C. to Lincoln’s hometown: One Small Step gains steam

Feb 19, 2026 by AFP

America turns 250 this year.

On this key date, we should all ask ourselves one question: Will we take our one small step to protect the ideas that make the American Dream possible?

At Americans for Prosperity, we’re already taking leaps. One month into AFP’s “One Small Step” campaign, it’s clear that people across the country are energetic and ready to keep the American Dream alive.

[Tell us what the American Dream means to you]

We felt that energy in our most recent events in Washington, D.C., and Springfield, Illinois: Americans are coming together to remember where we came from — and recommit to the principles that made our country strong.

In 1776, our Founding Fathers took a big risk and founded a country built on dignity, the rule of law, freedom, opportunity, civic duty, and limited government. Today, we’re lining up to defend that project for generations to come.

In the capital: Back to the basics

On February 10, we went to Washington, D.C., where grassroots leaders and national voices gathered at one of the year’s first One Small Step events to discuss the foundational values of America and how to reconnect the American people to them.

Former Gov. Glenn Youngkin, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, Freedom 250 CEO Keith Krach, and former NFL MVP Shaun Alexander joined AFP President and CEO Emily Seidel in an insightful conversation moderated by Guy Benson.

The focus of the talk was pretty clear: America is exceptional because we were founded on exceptional ideas like limited government, personal responsibility, and the freedom to pursue happiness.

The best solution to the problems we’re facing today as a country is not to renounce the principles that made America what it is in the first place, but to double down on them.

And that’s exactly where One Small Step comes in. Here’s what Emily had to say about the campaign:

“A movement to reconnect people to the idea that freedom doesn’t defend itself; people do. We’re not just celebrating the principles; we’re challenging Americans to act on them.”

Springfield, Illinois: Honoring Lincoln’s legacy

On February 12, we went to Springfield, Illinois, to celebrate a big day: Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.

We met with NFL Hall of Famer Brian Urlacher, Fox News contributor Mary Katharine Ham, and former U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz.

They talked about how, until his last days, Lincoln defended freedom, equal opportunity, and a government rooted in the Constitution.

Lincoln understood that America’s promise required courage and conviction. He took office in the most divided and challenging time in American history, but he didn’t shy away from the task.

Today, we might not face the same challenge Lincoln did, but we must follow his example and determination as we work together to keep the freedoms and liberties that are foundational to America.

Lincoln once said that government is “of the people, by the people, for the people.” And that means we, the people, must stay engaged.

One month in — what comes next

In its first month, One Small Step has already brought together Americans who believe our founding principles are still worth defending.

From Washington to Springfield, the message has been consistent: Freedom doesn’t defend itself; we must fight every day to keep it alive.

Ideas like limited government, individual liberty, personal responsibility, and equal opportunity.

These principles built the American Dream for generations, and it’s our job to keep them alive.

Generations of Americans have taken small steps to preserve these freedoms.

Now it’s your turn.

Are you ready to take one small step?
