Arlington, Va. – Americans for Prosperity (AFP) today called on President Trump to choose a strong constitutionalist to fill the U.S. Supreme Court vacancy left by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s passing. As the nation mourns her loss, the Constitution now charges the president with the responsibility to nominate her successor. AFP urged the president to select a qualified and independent-minded judge who adheres to the Constitution and applies the law fairly and without bias.
Previously, AFP activists proudly supported the confirmations of strong constitutionalists in Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. The grassroots group now stands ready to mobilize its activists to support the confirmation of a qualified nominee should one be selected.
Casey Mattox, Vice President for Legal and Judicial Strategy at Americans for Prosperity, issued the following statement:
“AFP urges President Trump to nominate to the U.S. Supreme Court a qualified jurist who will rule based on the Constitution, rather than a personal agenda. Good judges embrace their role to safeguard the constitutional rights of the people while recognizing that the people elect Congress, not the courts, to make law. We are prepared to bring the full weight of our grassroots infrastructure to bear in support of such a nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court.”
Background:
Americans for Prosperity heavily engaged its grassroots to support the confirmation of qualified nominees to the Supreme Court in previous years. AFP directly reached more than one million Americans in support of Justice Kavanaugh’s confirmation in 2018 through a combination of door-knocking, phone-banking, and other tactics.
